Hard Work Is the Foundation

Short one today, but I found myself marveling yesterday on just how much work swimming is.

The work can certainly be intimidating to look at at times, but it can also be liberating. The key to swimming well, at least to an extent, is simple. It lies in building a mountain of hard work. Consistent effort, applied over a long period of time. No frills, no bells.

Every Olympian started as an 8 and under at one point, and every swimmer going 18 seconds in the 50 free at NCAAs at one point was going 15+ seconds slower. They had to chip away and shave away at that time, and did it by consistently showing up, over and over again, through success and failure. It’s not always flashy, but it’s fulfilling. And it applies far beyond the sport. Success lies in repeated, focused attempts, through good and bad. Hard work is the foundation.
